The particular features of architecture with a view

Towers and viewing platforms by Botta, Christ and Gantenbein, SANAA, and many more.

Architecture with a view of the last fifteen years

"Architecture with a view" emerged and gradually gained in attractiveness as an architectural genre in the 19th century with the development of tourism. On the one hand, these buildings with a view – having come to town – serve visitors as platforms for surveying the panorama while also being used to market a location. On the other hand, these projects are gaining a new importance in the ecological context, the goal being to climb up and view the surrounding forest, something also aimed at by the "Canopy Walkways".

This richly illustrated publication with its photographs, models and plans outlines a panorama of architectural interventions over the last fifteen years. The themes dealt with include architecture and landscape, ecology and life world or the history of seeing and viewing, plus the interplay between architecture and art or architecture and engineering. The criterion for this particular selection of towers, platforms and smaller buildings was not so much size or prominence as architectural quality.

The book presents projects by Mario Botta, Gion A. Caminada, Christ and Gantenbein, HHF, Jürgen Mayer H., UN Studio, Diller Scofidio & Renfro, terrain, SANAA, SeArch, Snøhetta and others.

The particular features of the respective object are summarized in a brief description that also graphically presents its history. Special attention has been paid to landscapes expressly designed for tourists, such as, for example, the Jinhua Architecture Park in China, the Ruta del Peregrino in Mexico or the Nasjonale Turistveger in Norway.

With essays by Hubertus Adam (editor), Gion A. Caminada and Joachim Kleinmanns.
