Algorithmic Imaginary

Artistic Positions on the Future of the Internet and of Blockchain Technologies

Exhibition Exploring the Decentralized Web at the HEK (Haus der Elekronischen Künste): 2 September to 12 November 2023

Blockchain technology is changing the internet and the way we live together, communicate and act online and offline. Advocates of the technology point to the development of a new internet, Web3, and conjure up the notion of a gigantic future metaverse, as well as the implementation of increasingly decentralised organisations and structures. Is this just crypto-anarchistic wishful thinking, or is it forecasting a more democratic and just future for us all?

The publication focuses on the works and ideas of artists and theorists who analyse, question and conceive anew both blockchain technologies and the associated applications, such as DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organisations), NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and the metaverse?

With essays by, among others, Ruth Catlow, Primavera De Filippi, Sabine Himmelsbach, Boris Magrini, Penny Rafferty, Tina Rivers Ryan, Marina Otero Verzier.
